Award statues from the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards. |
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the contestants of The 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards this afternoon in Los Angeles. This year there are 67 film and TV titles competing in 25 categories.
While The Artist has the lead among the motion pictures with six nominations, The Descendants follows closely behind with the summer phenomenon The Help in tow - both with 5 nominations. In the two separate Best Picture categories that the Golden Globes boast with, there are 11 nominees this year - with The Descendants and The Help on the Drama side, making it easier for The Artist to snatch the glimmering statue in the Musical / Comedy category.
Considering the previous critics' awards and the SAG nominee list that was announced yesterday, there are not many surprises in the mix. With their separate acting categories for drama and comedy titles the HFPA parades 19 actors and actresses in the lead categories. The biggest surprise is that Ryan Gosling received two lead actor nominations, thus becoming the only actor to get two nods at this year's awards.
On the TV side of the Golden Globes, British production Downton Abbey led the way with HBO's Mildred Pierce as both received nominations in four categories. These two will compete against each other in the Best Mini-Series category, while three-time-nominees Homeland and Boardwalk Empire come face to face in the Drama category.
